What this statement probably means is that to not do these things. In other words, don't complain, whine and make excuses because it can affect you. For example, don't make excuses because that is showing that your not responsible and that you are like that and if you ever do that like when you come in late to school then it won't really matter since it is unexcused, meaning its probably not really that important.
